The New Discoveries Learning Center Preschool Program serves children ages 3 to 5 years old. Students at different developmental levels work and learn together in an inclusive preschool setting at each site. The program is licensed by New York State Department of Education. The special education services that are available in the program include evaluations, special education classes, speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy. All therapy programs and special developmental classes are conducted by a licensed, professional staff.
Children are assigned to classrooms that have either nine or twelve preschool students with differing levels of abilities and six children from our child care program. Staff ratios vary, depending on the physical and behavioral needs of the group.
Therapists often work in the classroom, although individual therapy is also provided to those who need intense one-to-one intervention. In addition to center-based services, we also offer home based therapy and educational services to children who have been identified as not needing a preschool program. As with all Upstate Cerebral Palsy programs, we strongly encourage parent involvement.
Daily Routines:
Children are provided a daily routine that outlines the events of the day. It breaks the day into recognizable blocks of time that are assigned to particular kinds of activities. These periods include plan-work-recall, small and large group times, and gross motor time. Each period involves children in active learning experiences within a supportive climate.
Our curriculum is based on High/Scope, which uses key experiences for the framework for interpreting child development. The content of our curriculum includes but is not limited to child initiative, social relations, creative representation, music and movement, language and literacy, and logic and mathematics.
Family Involvement/Visitation:
Parents are permitted and encouraged to visit the preschool program at any time.
No appointment is necessary.
The preschool program is committed to providing a full-range of support activities and resources to families. As needs arise, the program will work with parents to provide linkage to the full range of community resources that may be needed including parent education, day care, respite and habilitative services.
